The zoo is one of the most attractive places in Varna in the summer for both tourists and residents of the city. The zoo was founded in 1961 and first inhabitant was the bear Maxim. Since 2003, the zoo acts as a rescue center for animals in distress.
The zoo is located in Varna Sea Garden, which is only 10 minutes walk from the beach and the center of the city. Nowadays the zoo is a home to 72 species – 17 of which are protected and listed in the „Red book“ of Bulgaria. As most of the zoos in Bulgaria, the one in Varna also does not fully cover the legal requirements and standards of the European Union, and faces some serious difficulties in finding funds for investment in upgrading facilities and improving the living environment for its residents.
The project aims to improve the condition of the entire area of the zoo and thereby make it more attractive to visitors and meeting relevant standards for breeding animals.
